<hi style=afpcap>One of the most widely known fighter aircraft of the period between the two wars was the Boeing P-12 , which like many of the company's designs, began life as a private venture. The two prototypes were built in 1928, with both being sold to the US Navy the following year. Based on the faith vested in the venture by the Navy, the Army elected to order two examples for tests. This was followed by a order for ten aircraft as the P-12, with several subsequent versions designated the P-12B through P-12F with production exceeding 300. </hi>
